Shopify App Install Funnel: Track Views, Add-App Clicks and Installs

Most Shopify app teams watch one number: installs. It is the figure that gets celebrated, and it is the last step of a longer story. Before an install there is a click on Add app. Before that click there is a view of your listing. Each step loses some merchants, and each loses them for a different reason.

A Shopify app install funnel makes those losses visible. Instead of asking whether installs are up or down, you can ask which step changed, and for which source of traffic. That is a much more useful question.

For how to connect Google Analytics 4 and attribute installs to a source, see tracking Shopify app installs. This guide starts after that setup. It covers what each stage means, the ratios to watch, and what to check when one of them drops.

TL;DR: The Shopify App Install Funnel

Question

Quick answer

What are the stages?

Listing views, Add app clicks, and installs. Activation and first payment follow.

Which ratios matter?

Views to clicks, clicks to installs, and views to installs overall.

Why watch each one separately?

They fail for different reasons: listing appeal, install friction, and traffic quality.

What does Shopify send?

Client-side listing events, plus a server-side install event through the GA4 Measurement Protocol.

What is the common trap?

A blended rate that hides different traffic sources leaking in different places.

What should be checked first when installs fall?

Which ratio moved, and for which source. Then confirm that tracking itself still works.

‍

The Three Stages

Stage

What it measures

What it tells you about

Listing views

Merchants who reached your listing

Traffic and discovery

Add app clicks

Merchants who decided to try the app

How persuasive the listing is

Installs

Merchants who completed installation

Friction after the click, and trust

‍

Each stage is a different kind of decision. A view happens because of discovery. A click happens because the listing convinced someone. An install happens because the merchant was still willing after seeing what the app asks for. Blending them into one rate hides which decision is failing.

What Shopify Sends, and When

Shopify documents its listing analytics in the track listing traffic guide. To give full detail on the installation funnel, the App Store uses the GA4 Measurement Protocol for server-side events such as installation. That requires the listing to be on GA4 with an API secret entered.

Event

When it fires

How it is sent

Listing view (e-commerce view_item)

A merchant views your listing

Client-side from the App Store

Install button click (e-commerce add_to_cart)

A merchant clicks the install button

Client-side from the App Store

shopify_app_ad_click

A merchant reaches your listing from an App Store ad click

Sent with the full-funnel events

shopify_app_install

A merchant finishes installing

Server-side, with api_key, shop_id, shop_name, and shop_url

‍

The e-commerce events were added to listing pages, as noted in Shopify's changelog. Two practical details from the documentation matter. Event parameters can take up to 24 hours to propagate. And they must be registered as event-scoped custom dimensions before they appear in reports.

Confirm the event names in your own property

Shopify has extended these events over time, and older guides refer to an Add app button event. Before building a report, open GA4 Realtime and trigger each step yourself. Record the exact event names you see, and build the funnel from those.

A useful note from an older walkthrough by Rewind: a click on Add app is not an install. A merchant can drop off after the click and before finishing installation. That gap is exactly what the funnel measures.

The Ratios and What Each Tells You

Ratio

How to calculate it

A low figure usually points to

Views to clicks

Add app clicks divided by listing views

Listing content or traffic quality

Clicks to installs

Installs divided by Add app clicks

Permissions, install friction, or an expectation gap

Views to installs

Installs divided by listing views

A combined problem. Too blunt to diagnose alone

‍

Why the two step ratios beat the overall rate

Two listings can share the same overall rate and need opposite fixes. One may have a persuasive listing that loses merchants at the install step. Another may have a weak listing whose few clickers install readily. Only the step ratios show which.

Clicks to installs deserves special attention. The merchant has already said yes to your listing. Something between that click and the finished install changed their mind. Common suspects are the permissions requested, a price that surprised them, or a mismatch between what the listing promised and what the app asks for. Uninstall behaviour after installation is covered in Shopify app uninstalls.

A Worked Example by Source

The blended row says 6.0% of views become clicks and 62% of clicks become installs. That sounds fine. Split by source, the picture changes.

Source

What stands out

What to check

App Store search

Solid on both steps

Keep the listing keywords aligned with what merchants search

App Store ads

Weakest click-to-install rate at 40%

Whether the ad promise matches the app, and the audience being targeted

Partner referral link

Very high on both steps

A warm, pre-sold audience. Worth investing in more partners

‍

The partner row is worth noticing. Referred merchants arrive already convinced, so they click and install at rates search traffic rarely matches. That connects to Shopify app partnerships and to tracking affiliate referrals, where attribution decides whether a partner gets credit.

What to Check When a Ratio Drops

Symptom

Check first

Views up, clicks flat

Traffic quality. A new keyword or campaign may be bringing the wrong visitors

Views down

Discovery. Search ranking, keywords, and ad activity

Clicks steady, installs down

Recent changes to permissions, onboarding, or how pricing is shown

Everything down at once

Tracking. Verify the GA4 property, the API secret, and the events before assuming demand fell

Installs fine, revenue not

Activation and pricing after the install

‍

Discovery problems link to Shopify app discovery. A drop in the third row often shows up in reviews first, which is covered in tracking Shopify app reviews.

A sanity check on your own numbers

Views and clicks fire in the browser, so privacy tools and blockers can suppress some of them. Installs are sent from Shopify's servers. If your click-to-install rate looks implausibly high, or even above 100%, the likely cause is undercounted clicks rather than a miracle. Treat the client-side stages as directional and the install count as the anchor.

Beyond the Install

An install is the end of the acquisition funnel and the start of the retention one. The merchants worth counting are those who stay and pay.

After the install

The question

Where to look

Activation

Did the merchant complete setup and see value?

Health signals and early usage

First payment

Did they move from trial to a paid plan?

Revenue and plan mix

Retention

Are they still here after 30 and 90 days?

Churn by plan and by source

‍

Source matters again here. The best acquisition channel by volume is not always the best by retention. The wider structure appears in the Shopify app performance dashboard, where acquisition is one of six categories, and in merchant success, which follows the same merchants after they install.

Seeing the Funnel Without Writing Queries

Elevate connects to your Google Analytics data alongside your Shopify Partner account. Its install funnel view lines up listing views, add-app clicks, and installs by traffic source, and sits next to what those merchants did after installing. That means the funnel and the retention story live in one place.

Existing material is strongest on setup: how to enter a measurement ID, create an API secret, and read source and medium. It says much less about how to interpret the funnel once the data flows. That is the gap this page addresses.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a Shopify app install funnel?
The sequence of steps from a merchant seeing your App Store listing, to clicking Add app, to completing installation. Measuring each step separately shows where merchants drop off and why.

What events does Shopify send for an app listing?
Shopify sends client-side e-commerce events for listing views and install button clicks, an event for visits from App Store ads, and a server-side shopify_app_install event when installation finishes. Confirm current names in your own GA4 property.

Why do Add app clicks not match installs?
A click is only intent. Merchants can drop off after clicking, for example at the permissions step. The gap between clicks and installs is one of the most useful ratios in the funnel.

What is a good listing conversion rate?
There is no reliable universal figure. Rates vary by category, price, and traffic source. Compare your own funnel over time and across sources rather than against an external number.

Why should I split the funnel by traffic source?
Different sources leak in different places. A blended rate can look healthy while one source, such as paid ads, loses most of its clickers at the install step.

What should I check if installs suddenly drop?
First identify which ratio moved and for which source. Then rule out a tracking failure by checking the GA4 property, the API secret, and the events, before concluding that demand has changed.
